HSK Georgia Ranks High for Distracted Drivers

Beautiful young woman distracted while driving

The app company Life360 ranked Georgia as seventh in the nation when it comes to distracted driving, according to a report released in March. The report, in addition to other data, has led police to ramp up their efforts to decrease the habit in their jurisdictions.

According to reports, Life360 looked at cities for a period of time that lasted six weeks. The study ended in the middle of March. During that time, researchers found that drivers in Atlanta were more likely to use their cell phones behind the wheel than those in some other areas. The average driver in Atlanta used their cell phone just under three times each trip.

Soon after the numbers were released, officers in Cobb County set up a sting operation to get distracted drivers off the road. The police dressed as construction workers near Big Chicken. If a driver was spotted texting while driving, they were cited. As a result of the sting, police wrote 15 citations in only two hours. Another reason for the sting? The Department of Transportation says that deaths on Georgia roads hit its highest point in the decade in 2016.

Distracted driving is a very real problem in Georgia and across the country. Cell phone use is not the only distraction. Eating, grooming and reading behind the wheel are also known distractions, among others. Drivers are urged to remember that their primary responsibility behind the wheel is to remain focused on the road.
